About Environment Minnesota
Who we are
Environment Minnesota is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about Minnesota — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s the light shimmering off Lake Superior, the wild beauty of the Boundary Waters, or our countless parks and forests, Minnesota’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.
Yet the places we love and the environmental values we share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Environment Minnesota. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Minnesota’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door-to-door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Minnesota’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard — using methods like petitions, emails, letters and phone calls, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
Environment Minnesota has a proven track record of winning real results for our environment.
- Standing up for the Boundary Waters. When a dangerous new type of mining threatened to pollute the pristine Boundary Waters wilderness with sulfuric acid, we took action. Environment Minnesota played a vital role in the coalition effort to block any proposed mines by talking with tens of thousands of Minnesotans to build support for EPA action to protect them. Now, out-of-state mining companies have redoubled their efforts, but we'll be there to fight their polluting mines every step of the way.
- Putting solar to work for Minnesota. In 2010, Environment Minnesota won policies that made it easier and cheaper for homeowners and whole communities to go solar. Since then, we've forged a coalition of hundreds of groups across the state to move towards 10% solar by 2030.
- Better-protected waterways and parks. After our staff, volunteers and members talked to tens of thousands of people about the need to preserve our natural heritage, Minnesotans approved the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. Now we’re working to make sure those dedicated funds are used effectively to protect our waterways, parks and wildlife habitat.
