About Environment Minnesota
Who we are
Environment Minnesota is a citizen-based environmental advocacy organization and a project of Environment America. We believe there’s something special about Minnesota — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s the light shimmering off Lake Superior, the wild beauty of the Boundary Waters, or our countless parks and forests, Minnesota’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.
Yet the places we love and the environmental values we share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Environment Minnesota. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting our environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door-to-door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about our environment, our elected officials hear plenty from oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard — using methods like petitions, emails, letters and phone calls, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
Environment Minnesota has a proven track record of winning real results for our environment.
- Standing up for the Boundary Waters. It’s obvious: Allowing toxic sulfide mining on the edge of the Boundary Waters is a terrible idea. You’ve helped us lead the charge to block these mines: Already, we’ve delayed a dangerous land swap that would open the floodgates for toxic mining in the area. Now, we’re pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to protect the Boundary Waters for good.
- Helping Minnesota go solar. In 2013, we passed a groundbreaking bill that will increase solar more than 30-fold by the end of the decade — a huge victory for our environment, our health and our planet. This bill will help Minnesota get 10 percent of our energy from solar by 2030 — but with your help, we won’t stop until all of our energy comes from clean, renewable sources like solar.
- Protecting our rivers. t’s disgusting. Runoff and seepage from industrial agriculture is allowed to pollute our rivers and streams with pesticides, fertilizer and livestock waste in the very waterways where our families swim, fish and boat. In 2013, we took a big step toward fixing this problem when the state passed Environment Minnesota- backed legislation to help clean up polluted waterways. Now, with your support, we’re fighting for strict limits on runoff pollution.
